She talks of a before and after 9/11. "Traveling in the US and elsewhere, today, in a post September 11, 2001 environment, means preparing mentally to deal with a degree of anxiety individuals did not experience in times past..." "What is to be noted regarding 9/11 is the agreement this event imprinted the work environment noticeably. Burke contended after 9/11, not playing by the old rules almost became acceptable, changing the employment contract between employers and employees." Today, the Charlie Hebdo massacre, the Copenhagen shootings, the death of Kayla Mueller, among other incidents in an interminable list tend to confirm 9/11 did change our world in an indelible way, altering the employment relationship forever. This study fits in the current environment marred with workplace anxiety; France, of all countries surveyed, exhibited the highest resistance to monitoring. It was interesting given this comment, "If one considers monitoring has its place in a society in tumult, ..., workplace anxiety is an important construct, because it helps shape employees' behaviors." It may show this: Employee monitoring is here to stay. Employees better be used to that notion.
