Adenosine has been implicated in the spontaneous and abrupt arrest of seizures (Dragunow, 1986). The anticonvulsant action of adenosine and its analogs has been observed in several different studies. adenosine and its analogs protect against audiogenic, chemically-induced and kindled seizures. Theophylline-induced convulsions may be related to a cerebral vasoconstriction or to an antagonistic effect on the central adenosine receptors.
