This book deals with al-Hajj Umar Taal. He is a famous senegalese cleric who had been one of the first to fiercely fight against french imperialism in West Africa. He was the founder of a gigantic empire, "the Tekrour kingdom", which actually constituted a buffer zone between the west african coastal zones and the hinterlands.
