In modern communication services such as Wi-Fi, WiMAX and Microwave applications. A low cost and high performance antennas are required. The microstrip antennas are preferred in such applications due to their very low profile and cost. In this thesis a slotted dumbbell shaped microstrip patch antenna is proposed and its performances are compared with the rectangular microstrip patch antenna. The electromagnetic simulation of theproposed antenna has been carried out using IE3D software. Through IE3D software Return loss, VSWR, directivity, gain, efficiency and radiation pattern are evaluated for the proposed antenna. Cutting of a slot in patch antenna increases the current path which increases current intensity and as a result efficiency is increased and desired results are obtained. A probe feed for proposed antenna is also designed and the measured results are compared with simulated results. The radiation property of a slotted dumbbell shaped microstrip patch antenna is also compared with normal rectangular patch antenna designed under identical conditions. All the designs have the same dielectric constant 2.2, substrate thickness of 1.8 mm and loss tangent of 0.0009.
