Following the 2012 rebellion and coup d état in Mali, there has been increasing calls for an extension of the global war on terror to tackle radical Islamists in northern Mali as well as other initiatives to broker peace with the Tuaregs and stabilize Mali. At the peak of initiatives to normalise Mali, the UNSC passed resolution 2100 on April 25, 2013 - creating the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). Part of MINUSMA s mandate is to assist the Malian government in "developing and implementing programmes for the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of former combatants and the dismantling of militias and self-defence groups, consistent with the objectives of reconciliation and taking into account the specific needs of demobilized children." This capstone examines how the DDR programme can serve in protecting lives and livelihoods in Mali.
