This stunning volume features over a decade's worth of Chie Yoshii's vibrant and entrancing oil paintings.
Dreams is the first book-length retrospective of Chie Yoshii's work, written in both English and her native Japanese. With over 100 paintings, additional enlarged details, drawings, and accompanying essays, this comprehensive 200 page book invites you into a mysterious sanctuary composed of delicate brushstrokes, luminous characters, and sumptuous, jewel-like colors.
Combining technique reminiscent of the old masters with a modern sensibility, Chie Yoshii creates a singular world of collective dreams. Inspired by the relationship between human psychology and mythical archetypes, she weaves enduring themes into complex symbolic and surreal visual narratives. Her enigmatic images embody contrasting elements such as novelty and nostalgia, innocence and sensuality, and strength and fragility, mirroring the intricacy of the psyche. In her opulent oil paintings, characters seem to peer into the very depths of one's soul.
