Much has been written on the Digital Policies, though a comprehensive look at the state of the technology and its deployment has been lacking. This book fills the gap by taking an overarching view of the field, assessing how far the technology has come, identifying gaps, and projecting into its future potential. The book includes explicit examples of digital policy based management systems, and illustrates the internal structures of a digital policy and a policy decision point. Given the rich promise of the digital policy based management paradigm, as detailed in this book, and given the persistent efforts in the US Government for its adoption, we anticipate that this paradigm will open a new era in enterprise management. Adoption of this technology will lead to smart enterprises with lean cost structures, quick response to changing customer trends, dynamic operations that can evolve gracefully and cost effectively, integrated operations that can provide situation awareness and common operating picture, forward looking transformational management, and secure operations in the cyberspace. The era of the smart enterprises has arrived.
