Desalination is a process of removing salts and dissolved solids from sea water or any fresh water source. Desalination techniques are used all over the world but producing drinking water from desalination is very expensive. Reverse osmosis is considered by many as the future for desalination. But Reverse osmosis desalination methods also consume a large amount of energy. To provide drinking water at reduced energy consumption, Forward osmosis can be developed. The potential of the method for desalination is widely discussed. The project is focused on developing a Forward Osmosis unit and experimentally studying the potential of Forward Osmosis. The cost analysis of various desalination techniques has been done and the need for energy efficient technique is justified.
