Knowledge about an image component is expressed as /Rn Dn Ln Un / where refers to the coordinates of the starting point; the delimiter denotes the change in direction; refers to the coordinates of the end point of the contour component. LAT is used to extract and recognize handwritten single letters and single words from scanned images.
