First raised in 1694 during the expansion of the Army's establishment to fight William III's wars with Louis XIV's expansionist France, the regiment took part in most of Britain's subsequent conflicts - usually with France - throughout the late Stuart, Georgian and Victorian ages. This volume, compiled in 1891 as the Victorian era and Empire reached its acme, covers all these conflicts, including the regiment's part in the War of Spanish Succession; the Seven Years' War; the American War of Independence; and the Peninsular War - as well as its role in colonial conflicts in India, Africa and North America. It is a truly astonishing compilation, containing such information as detailed biographies of officers, the music of regimental marching songs, portraits of prominent officers and regimental standards; along with letters and personal accounts of actions, which all go a long way towards explaining why Lord Cathcart, writing in 1797, described the 29th as 'the boast of the British Army'. Reproduced now in a handsome illustrated volume, this is as complete and fascinating a regimental record as can be found.
