It condense all the necessary parameters for describing a given polarizer, retarder, or scatterer into a single package, and provide a set of rules whereby the result of interposing any given polarizer, retarder, or scatterer in a given beam can be determined merely by multiplying the appropriate images together in a standard manner. Thus the outcome of any pertinent experiment can be determined by one fixed procedure, selecting the appropriate packagesfrom a table and multiplying them together.
