The campaigns of a military genius of the ancient world After the assassination of his father, Philip, Alexander became King of Macedonia in 336 BC at the age of 20 years. He immediately killed all rivals to his throne and set about subduing the Greek states to support him in the invasion of Persia. Although he had already ridden to war, then began the meteoric military career of a monarch who has not only become one of the most notable commanders in history, but a man whose renown would continue for two millennia and beyond his own time . This Leonaur book has been re-published because it offers a concise and clear insight into Alexander the Great and his times. Particularly usefully, the text is divided into Alexander's ten most notable campaigns. During the period 334-333 BC Alexander's forces defeated Darius III at the Granicus River and Issus. In 332 BC he conquered Tyre and marching southwards took Egypt and founded the great city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean shore. Between 331-329 BC, Alexander defeated Darius at Gaugamela, the king of Persia was murdered by one of his own governors, the Achaemenid Empire effectively came to an end and Alexander proclaimed himself King of Persia. Within two years Alexander began his invasion of the Indian sub-continent defeating King Porus at the Hyaspes (modern- Jhelum) in the (modern) Punjab. Thereafter Alexander returned to the west to die in Babylon in 323 BC-aged 32 years, forever to be known as 'the Great' . Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
Autorenporträt
If you are looking for the author, John Williams, you won't find him in the office writing. He may be trekking a nearby hiking trail or floating in his canoe or kayak on one of the beautiful lakes that surround his Appalachian foothills home. If not there, jump on your bicycle and find a nearby trail, he may be wrapped around a tree somewhere and in need of your help. Teddi, his wife of 50 years, will tell you to take your time. Four children, all grown, made a break for it and put roots in different parts of our beautiful country. The seven grandkids don't know what he looks like. Go to the nearest locally owned coffee shop and just by chance he may be there. He will be the only one with a pencil and paper.
