To become other, different or to be oneself, such is the dilemma lived and felt by Driss Ferdi, dazzled by Western civilization, torn between two diametrically opposed parental figures, that of his friend and teacher Roche and that of his father the lord. With Le passé simple, Driss Chraïbi, the forerunner of French-speaking Moroccan literature, inaugurates a literary career that traces the alienation between two imperfect cultures. This ambiguous feeling of being torn apart is analyzed in this book, which proposes a reading of a past that cannot be simple.
