Thidiazuron (TDZ) is a phenylurea derivative cytokinin-like compound widely used for plant micropropagation. TDZ, has a strong cytokinin-like activity and is mostly used for adventitious shoot bud induction and multiplication. The promotive effect of TDZ on adventitious shoot bud induction and multiplication is mainly due to its potent activity of promoting the production and accumulation of endogenous plant hormones, mainly cytokinins. TDZ was used to induce a wide range of in vitro responses such as callogenesis, organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis. TDZ was also used to prevent leaf senescence, break bud dormancy, enhance the photosynthetic activity and break the apical dominance. In the present book, we reported the main findings regarding the use of TDZ for the development of efficient in vitro regeneration systems in the most economically important temperate, tropical and subtropical fruit species.
