A story about an Aboriginal park ranger who uses the skills he has learned from watching the animals his grandfather uses as teaching guides to live a better life. The behaviour of animals and survival skills enhance his abilities in his career as a park ranger.
George Chalifoux is a member of the Driftpile Cree First Nation. During my school years, I was reminded that I would not amount to anything. I would end up in prison like all my kind. I would prove them all wrong, as there are some of us who will not bend to that type of thinking. This was my biggest challenge.I attended the Resource Management Assistant Program for a career in Fish & Wildlife, but due to budget cuts within the F&W department, I joined the Alberta Forestry Service. I began my duties as a patrolman issuing fire permits to the public for safe burning practices. After 32 years, I moved up the ladder and retired as a wildfire ranger. During my time with the government of Alberta, I have attended numerous wildfires. I was the representative for the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area for the Junior Forest Rangers for 20 years when I retired. Achievements include being a billboard model for the prevention of wildfire, which was placed across the province of Alberta in 2004, and retiring from a career that many will not achieve.
