My dear swim moms and dads or if you are a sport parent but not necessarily a swim parent , this piece is just my humble attempt to share with you some invaluable insights I've garnered throughout my journey as a swim parent. Initially, my aspirations were simple: I desired for my daughter to acquire the essential life saving skill of swimming. However, as fate would have it, her heart was drawn to the sport, and despite my initial reservations regarding her competitive involvement, I found myself drawn into its depths. Today, afterwhat seems like an eternity, I find myself reflecting on the myriad lessons learned. The educator in me is eager to impart some of the wisdom acquired along the way.
I've had the privilege of witnessing the tangible outcomes that emerge from the application of certain principles and I am grateful for these. Regrettably, I've also borne witness to instances where well-intentioned parents, albeit unknowingly, engaged in behaviors that proved detrimental to their children's journey within the sport, resulting in premature departures from what could have been promising athletic careers. It serves as an important reminder of the timeless truth in the statement: "It is not your aptitude, but your attitude that determines your altitude."
Thus, with a genuine desire to contribute positively to our collective sport community, I share with you these insights as a humble attempt to address some of the challenges we encounter along the way.
