Reflecting developments in the study of Saint-Venant's problem, this book focuses on the deformation of elastic cylinders for three models of continuum: classical elastic continuum, Cosserat elastic body, and porous elastic material. With numerous results not found in related texts, it presents a method to study the problem of elastic bars subjected to body forces and surface tractions on the lateral boundary. The author examines elastic bars made of inhomogenous elastic materials, studies the behavior of Cosserat cylinders, and discusses the deformation of porous elastic bars. Many exercises and examples show how the methods discussed can be used to solve engineering problems.
