Each monster in Lovecraft's world represents one of the countless facets of chaos. Lurking in the depths of the ocean or residing in the depths of impenetrable forests, sleeping in Egyptian pyramids or walled up in mountain caves, coming to our planet from the stars or from the abyss of countless centuries, they are invariably hostile to humanity and beyond the control of reason.
