"The Master and Margarita," a novel about the devil by Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov, work on which began in December 1928 and continued until the writer's death in March 1940. Bulgakov worked on his "sunset novel" for more than 12 years, rewriting it several times. Many drafts, unfortunately, were irretrievably lost, but the writer's remaining archive is a huge handwritten treasure. The first drafts, variants and editions of the novel are of great interest. The very first manuscripts, to which "The Engineer's Hoof" belongs, are more in tune with the author's intention, since they were not yet subject to self-censorship - neither primary nor subsequent.
