A major objective of the scientific programme "The European Climate and Man since the Last Glaciation", is to elucidate the influence of man on the climate during the last 10,000 years. Clearance of forest was without doubt man's most important contribution to early environmental change. Therefore, a working group on land clearance by man was established. The first workshop, held by the working group in 1990, called for cooperation between archaeologists and natural scientists.
