The Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe has recently handed over responsibility for regional co-operation in South Eastern Europe to its regionally owned successor organisation, the Regional Co-operation Council. Geb. 1941, 1975-76 Generalsekretär der Österreichischen Volkspartei, 1976-1978 Stadtrat in Wien, 1976 - 1987 Landeshauptmann Stellvertreter und Vizebürgermeister von Wien, 1989-1994 Bundesminister für Wissenschaft und Forschung, 1991-1995 Vizekanzler der Republik Österreich und Bundesparteiobmann der Österreichischen Volkspartei, seit 1995 Vorsitzender des Instituts für den Donauraum und Mitteleuropa, seit November 1996 Koordinator der Southeast European Cooperation Initiative, seit 2000 Regierungsbeauftragter der österreichischen Bundesregierung für EU-Erweiterungsfragen und Präsident des Europäischen Forum Alpbach, seit 2002 Sonderkoordinator des Stabilitätspaktes für Südosteuropa, Visiting Professor an der Duke University in North Carolina.
