Kaizen is a Japanese participative Quality management technique. KAI means change and ZEN means better. Thus kaizen means change for the better. It implies small improvements done continuously. Kaizen technique is successfully implemented in Japanese industries. The success rate forced the western countries to take interest in the technique. But in India, only a few companies have tried this technique. Especially no literature and data is available on kaizen in the textile industry in India. So it was felt that there is a good scope to improve the textile industry by implementing kaizen technique with a small modification to suit Indian conditions. It was implemented at two mills in Tamilnadu. Kaizen teams were formed by choosing kaizens from staff and workers at all the levels. The regular meeting was conducted to get suggestions from the workers. Then they were implemented, even if they were very small in nature. This resulted in waste reduction quality improvement, increase productivity etc. The worker moral increased as they were given an opportunity to use their brainpower.
