Many of today's architects aspire to or are becoming POP stars, producing materials and designs which are mass-consumed in ever faster cycles of hyper-mediatisation, in which buildings and whole urban conglomerations operate as backdrops, setting the stage for products or serving directly as icons for individual institutions or even whole cities.Which aspects have lead to modern POP phenomena? How is architecture using and reinterpreting these factors? And why and how can POP culture enable a new positioning of architecture in today s society? The 2007 symposium of the Architecture Design Innovation Program created a two-day public platform at the Technical University Berlin to discuss such questions on POP and its relationship to architecture. Students, architects and a distinguished panel of international guest critics judging student projects were participating. The book collects their contributions to the conference.
