The species of Alternanthera (Family Amaranthaceae) needs special consideration as some of them are being used as leafy vegetables and are medicinally important. A thorough scientific analysis of these neglected/under-utilized green leafy vegetables is required since they may be sources of essential components like flavonoids, phenolics and vitamins. The present study analyzed the nutritional and antinutritional factors in the selected species of Alternanthera viz. A. tenella, A. braziliana, A. sessilis, A. philoxeroides and A. versicolor for their effective utilization. Among the species analyzed, A. sessilis and A. philoxeroides possess high nutritional and low level of anti-nutritional factors and can be used as a potential candidate for solving nutrition deficiency problems to a certain extent.
