In the current world there are many conflicts in which terrorism has occurred. It is important as we move forward for society to take a look at why terrorism has so firmly embedded itself into our world and ways that these groups can be encouraged to transition away from violent means. Peace organizations, this book will argue, are one piece of the puzzle in helping to deal effectively with groups that use violence to get their message across and create mayhem within democratic societies. The field of terrorism studies has looked for many years at how to counter-terrorism. However, much of the research that has been done only focuses on short-term tactics to deal with terrorism. This approach fails to embrace medium- and long-term tactics in addressing the spread of terrorism. Current academic literature surrounding long-term counterterrorism and peacekeeping may be of use to the field. There is a great deal of potential to be found in marrying the two together and learning from the work done in the field of long-term peacekeeping and how it can be applied to long-term counterterrorism.
