It is surrounded by the municipalities of Chignahuapán, Aquixtla, Tetela de Ocampo, Cuautempan, Tepetzintla, Ahuacatlán, Chiconcuautla, Ahuazotepec and Huauchinango. The municipality covers a total area of 512.32 km².The climate is wet, with year-long rains.
