The purpose of this book is to improve understanding of student disabilities and disorders. With better understanding, educators will be in a better position to use appropriate strategies and routines to control student behaviors and improve student learning and progress based on scientific evidence.

Dr. Flis has been an educator for over 18 years. He has taught high school students with special needs and typical students both inside and outside of the public-school setting. He received his Ed. D. in organizational leadership with an emphasis in special education in 2020 from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. He also holds a M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from Arizona State University, Scottsdale, Arizona, and an B.A. in international studies from University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. Dr. Flis enjoys aviation and holds a FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate and FAA Instructors Certificate. He has a State of Arizona Teaching Certificate in special education with a cross-categorical endorsement. Dr. Flis also resided in Brazil for over 20 years and was owner of a marine agency and telecommunications business in Vitoria-ES, Brazil. The company had 18 fulltime employees. Currently, he lives in Tucson, Arizona, and enjoys the mountains and desert climate. His philosophy of education is that all students are different and must have a motivating educational environment where they can grow emotionally, mentally, physically, and socially. He endeavors to create this type of atmosphere where learners can meet their full potential. It is his wish to provide a safe environment where students are invited to share their ideas and learn from their mistakes.
